ASC Facts & Figures
What is an ASC?
Ambulatory Surgery Centers are outpatient facilities that offer the same clinical setting as a hospital operating room, with significantly improved access for patients, convenience, and quality of care. An Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is a licensed outpatient facility that offers a state-of-the-art operating room and equipment where your doctor can perform a procedure. ASCs are typically less expensive, safer, and more convenient than having your procedure done in the hospital, and adhere to the same regulated clinical safety standards.
ASC rates for facility use are substantially lower than hospitals. For instance, in 2014, Medicare found that by shifting just colonoscopies in Tennessee out of hospitals and into ASCs, the program saved more than $5 million in that one year alone for that single procedure. Overall, ASCs save Medicare about $2.3 billion every year (and Medicare only covers about 1/4 of Americans).
